Eventually the area was named Chictawauga, meaning "land of the crabapples". Settlers began to permanently live in the town after the American Revolutionary War. Originally, Cheektowaga was a large rural farming area, but after WWII and the subdivision boom of the 1950s, the town was expanded extensively. Now, this area is the second largest suburb of the city of Buffalo, with a population around 87,000 people.

Cheektowaga is home to two higher educational institutions, Villa Maria College and Empire State College, as well as eight public school districts, the Walden Galleria mall, and the Buffalo Niagara International Airport. It offers a close proximity to many other notable attractions and recreational activities.
